Star actor Arindam (played by the then Bengali star Uttam Kumar) is travelling by train from Kolkata to Delhi to receive an award. He is approached by a journalist and begins to reveal his past, fears and secrets to her. When the train reaches its destination, Arindam is met by his enthusiastic fans and switches back to his star self, where there is no room for guilt or confessions. In artful flashbacks, Ray tells a convoluted life story, as entertaining as it is moving with its sensitively formulated doubts about supposed values such as fame and success. (gv)
